Wirepas a key contributor to a new global IoT connectivity standard

ETSI (The European Telecommunications Standards Institute) has announced a new global IoT connectivity standard: DECT-2020 New Radio (NR). Wirepas has been one of the key contributors to it and has entirely shared its unique technology in an effort to help customers navigate the fragmented industrial IoT market.

The new standard fills a gap currently in the IoT connectivity environment; it addresses industrial applications requiring either or both massive scale (mMTC) and/or ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC), complementing today’s 5G technology. It applies modern radio technologies such as OFDM modulation, efficient channel codings and HARQ. It also has a dedicated global spectrum at around 1900 MHz, ensuring low interference levels.

The technology enables simple deployment and very cost-efficient operation, demanded by various industries. Thanks to its ultra-reliable autonomous and automatic operation, there is no need for network infrastructure nor for a network operator. It can be deployed anywhere by anyone in no time.

“ETSI’s new standard is a great response to the needs industries have in digitalization. The new standard brings mMTC and URLLC performance to a whole new level, which provides great flexibility to address large-scale and high-density applications in logistics and building automation, and low-latency applications in industry automation. In terms of bit rates, communication range and reliability, the DECT-2020 NR technology offers completely new opportunities for local and private networks as industrial companies, solution providers and other players can independently develop their own solutions and services,” explains Jussi Numminen, Vice Chair of the ETSI Technical Committee DECT and Head of RF at Wirepas in the ETSI press release.

The new standard builds on current Wirepas technology, adding longer range (up to 5km), higher throughput and ultra-reliability. The new radio option won’t replace the current Wirepas 2.4 GHz offering.

This is the very beginning of our standardization journey, stay tuned for more to come soon!
