Meet our Team: Who do you call when a node goes rogue?
When someone asks you, “what do you do for work?” you probably have an answer ready. However, for some people, the answer is what the company does, rather than what they do themselves. It’s easier that way. We’ve got these people! And we are proud of them all.
Jari Ruohonen, our Principal System Engineer, is one of the geniuses behind the product, whose work is so complicated that it’s easier not to tell. We get it. We also know what he does is very valuable to Wirepas, even when it’s not visible or easily described.
Just like Wirepas, Jari is a Tampere University of Technology alumni. He has been working in the cellular industry before joining Wirepas. If he had continued that path, our software would not be very very good. It would be called “ok IoT”. The mesh would not be as reliable or fast as it is now. The nodes would use a lot more power too. His job is to make sure the software works as intended. Sometimes, a node may go rogue. Jari has developed a tool to diagnose why a node is malfunctioning. With the data collected by the tool, he can locate problems so that they can be fixed. In software development, you’re not ever ready. When developing new, something already working always breaks. That’s how it goes. So, there are always new bugs to hunt and fix.
De-bugging similar things daily may get repetitive, but what excites Jari is the scale of small things: When there’s a bug in the software, if it’s in one node, it’s in every node. But it goes both ways. If something is done well, it’s in the whole network, not just one device. So, a little truly goes a long way.
Jari’s job is more diverse and profound than our “tl;dr” simplification of his job. But if we told more, you would know too much.
